The 34-year-old suspect was wanted in connection to a shooting that happened Friday, when a teenager was shot to death at a strip mall near Beniteau and Mack.
The little girl was shot in the neck and taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The shooting is still under investigation.
Police say the suspect was found inside the home and taken into custody. It is very important to know that the “suspect” was in an upstairs apartment of the house, in no way linked to Aiyana’s family. While he was “found” and “taken into custody”, it is a flat out lie to say that he was found “inside the home”.
Home and house do not mean the same thing. Any decent journalist, and most regular folks, could tell you this. Each apartment within a house is its own home. Because home is where and who you come home to. The house had more than one apartment. Aiyana was in the downstairs apartment and that is the apartment that was attacked. The suspect was in the upstairs apartment, and it’s amazing he didn’t get away during all the confusion.
To say that the suspect was found in the home is a way of misinforming the public. People read that and say “ah, well, see, they was harboring him”. People say (i’ve personally seen this in comments elsewhere) “well, they didn’t have to do it the way they did, they should have waited him out or something, but they were just doing their job and it’s too bad this innocent child got in the way”.
That is not what happened. But the police would like for us to think it is. Because then Aiyana’s tragic death can be called an “accident”, a tragedy whose blame falls on the family for helping a suspected murderer, “collateral damage”.
That is not what happened.
And the media is intentionally misinforming you.
If this little girl and her family were white could you imagine the outrage?
God damn it would be a frenzy. But since it was a black girl and it’s being reported that the suspect the police were looking for was “in the home”, then of course it was just some tragic accident.
Fuck this milatirizing the police force bullshit. They’re not SWAT. They are POLICE. And would it kill them to stake out a location for a while before barging in with their guns drawn?!

The authors conclude that in racialized societies like ours, crime is viewed through a warped lens, and that crime and criminality become associated with marginalized groups. (This is why people believe most drugs are used and sold by black people, when the opposite is true.) As the authors write, “when dominant groups associate criminality with well-defined and disliked ‘others,’ it brings into sharp focus those needed to be potentially repressed.”
Shocking, shocking, that people who hold racist beliefs are more likely to support lock ‘em up policy. Who knew?
"As much as we like to make China out to be the modern epitome of repressive states, there’s far more people imprisioned per capita in the US than there or anywhere else; perhaps the bulk of these people didn’t commit any violent crimes. There’s a whole scary industry built up around caging people in the so-called land of the free, one that perpetuates the degradation of communities & our democracy in general.
But instead of being yet another one of those overwhelming social problems that leave you feeling pissed & helpless, there’s lots of pretty easy things you can do to help.
